Group apparel is not a new concept, by any stretch of the imagination. One can travel to the ancient ruins of Egypt and observe that dynasties established unity through fashion. Perhaps it was the desire to exhibit power or a sense of belonging to the dynastic community that motivated the leader to incorporate a dress code for his subjects. Ancient hieroglyphics demonstrate a pattern of clothing that provided a sense of belonging and unity. |
Paul Revere’s midnight ride is notorious for his reference to the most feared group fashion of the day. He proclaimed, “The Redcoats are coming!” and everyone knew who he was referencing. The greatest military presence was in town and ready to keep their newly found property. Of course, it could be argued that the British Army’s fashion may have been their downfall as the red fabric was an easy target. But, a purchase order for camouflage uniforms sent to the king may have changed the uniform and the British flag might still be waving over much of North America. |
Group fashion does not stop there. Sports groups are on the rise. Once considered on the decline, bowling leagues, with their matching shirts, are making a comeback. It is almost considered taboo when someone runs a race or volunteers for an event and a T-shirt is not given. Family reunions, fundraising campaigns, and corporate apparel are branded, embroidered, mass produced, and sold at an ever increasing pace. Group fashion is not going away.
